\nThe University of Shizuoka recently held an online lecture event to discuss foreign nurse candidates from Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia in Japan under economic partnership agreements (EPAs). Michiyo Yoneno-Reyes, a professor of cultural anthropology at the university, and others explained the current situation and issues, amongst other topics.<\/p>\n

Yuko Hirano, a professor of healthcare sociology at Nagasaki University, pointed out that while the candidates are generally satisfied with their training in Japan, \u201ceven if they pass the Japanese national examination and gain experience, in their home countries they may not be able to work as nurses without the necessary qualifications.\u201d Hirano stressed the need to give consideration to returnees\u2019 career paths by, for example, having training in Japan be recognized as credits in the sending country.<\/p>\n

Professor Yoneno-Reyes explained that there is a move to improve the working conditions of and benefits for medical personnel in the Philippines, which is facing a shortage due to the coronavirus, and that \u201cnurses are needed in many places\u201d in the country, \u201cand this may affect applications for training in Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n
